Mule Hide – Apron Split Leather, Mule hide leather, or apron split, most often gets cut into horn wraps for saddles. Horseshoers will also make farrier aprons out of this leather. Despite the misleading name, these leather pieces come from cow and not mule. These sides average 25 square feet and are cut from the middle of the hide. Thickness averages between 6 and 8 ounces (3/32″ to 1/8″).
